folklore museum
Founded as a collection of the at that time existing antiquity club for the principality Ratzeburg in 1903, the museum has become one of the most important folklore collections of northern Germany.
The development of the collegiate land of the bishops from Ratzeburg led to the creation of an own culture in the fields of architecture, in furnitures and clothes, which is unique in Mecklenburg.
The folklore museum in Schönberg keeps these proofs of a real folk culture, which the collection of rural armrest chairs and dresses with a nationwide meaning belongs to, especially the embroidered breast cloths.
The with sequins trimmed Schönberger dresses of the farmer's wifes consist of a skirt and a bodice out of heavy cotton, trimmed with coloured silk ribbons, a blouse with white embroidery and a cap made by gold brocade or velvet. A special decoration are the large decorated breast cloths, which are trimmed with sequins. The museum has 120 pieces of these breast cloths.
There are also many unique pieces about the history of the Grand Duchy from Mecklenburg-Strelitz, e.g. the honorary standart by King Friedrich Willhelm III from Prussia, which was bestowed on the C-Husaren in 1815 or a district husar uniform from 1905.
